In an earth shattering move, Kim Jong-un has replaced three of his top military officers and replaced them with people who are open to denuclearization. This is huge news for a couple of reasons. The first one is obviously it makes it easier for Kim to negotiate disarming at the summit, but more importantly, Kim now needs a deal badly to keep from being overthrown. My guess is he will insist that the United States will defend against a coup that would kill any deal he agrees to. That would be in our best interest too. Kim is looking to make North Korea more prosperous, but still under his control.
A little more than a week before his historic meeting with President Donald Trump, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has removed his top three military officials, South Korea’s Yonhap has reported. The move is fueling speculation over the direction the isolated regime may be taking.
“No Kwang-chol, first vice minister of the Ministry of People’s Armed Forces, replaced Pak Yong-sik as defense chief, while Ri Myong-su, chief of the (Korean People’s Army) general staff, was replaced by his deputy, Ri Yong-gil,” Yonhap reported.
“These changes are in addition to Army Gen. Kim Su-gil’s replacement of Kim Jong-gak as director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People’s Army.
This move also eliminates the possible coup while he is out of the country. That has been a major concern of Kim’s from the beginning and this move will prevent that from happening. His country is poor and Kim would obviously like to improve conditions in his country. Not necessarily for the right reasons but it would greatly improve the lives of all North Koreans.
The United States is now in the catbird seat. Kim needs to make a deal but it must be one that that appears to be good for his country.
