President Donald Trump on Tuesday hinted that the U.S. is looking “very seriously” at establishing a permanent military base in Poland.
The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, said his country was so eager to get a commitment from the United States he offered to pay billions of dollars to offset the costs of building the new facility, and said he would name it “Fort Trump.”
Trump talked about the prospect of a new base when he and Duda met in the Oval Office on Tuesday, telling reporters they would discuss the issue, and “we’re looking at it very seriously.”
“Poland is willing to make a very major contribution to the United States to come in and have a presence in Poland,” Trump added. “If they’re willing to do that, it’s something we will certainly talk about.”
When Putin invaded Crimea under the Obama administration, the U.S. and NATO created a constant rotation of troops in Poland under the European Reassurance Initiative. Poland has now asked for a headquarters and a permanent plan.
The building of a base could possibly anger Russian President Vladimir Putin, even though Trump has gone all out to create a better relationship with the Kremlin.
Poland argues that it has already met its NATO goal of spending 2 percent of its GDP on defense, something Trump has often criticized other European allies for failing to meet, allies like Germany who doesn’t meet its NATO obligation payments, which are designed to protect the country from Russian aggression and meanwhile Germany is entering into deals with Russia for oil and gas.
Can you blame the Polish people for being eager to have a U.S. base on their soil, especially after what the Soviet Union did to them during the Cold War? A base there would help Trump make Europe great again.
